Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?

Kangaroo Outtake (1985)

Where are you going?
Where have you been?
Have you been to the capital
And seen jack-booted men?
Did you smell any gun smoke?
Did you hear any shots?
Did you smell a rebellion
Or hear of a plot?
Shhh!

Watch who you talk to you
Watch what you say
Or they’ll come in the night
And they’ll haul you away
Don’t stick your neck out
Don’t take the chance
They’re ruling this country
With a truncheon and a lance

Where are you going?
Where have you been?
Have you seen what’s been thrown out
And what’s been dragged in?
Do you think they can see us?
Do you think we’ve been bugged?
Is the meat tasting funny?
Do you think we’ve been drugged?
Shhh!

Watch who you talk to you
Watch what you say
Or they’ll crash through your window
And they’ll pull you away
Don’t stick your nose out
Don’t take the chance
They’re ruling this country
With a truncheon and a lance

I had a dream last night, such a terrible dream,
I saw you in the days gone by
With your brown eyes flashing
And your face in a rainbow sky
When I reached out to kiss you,
You disappeared like smoke
As you whispered good-bye

Where are you going?
Where have you been?
Have you heard any news
Of my next of kin?
Have you seen executions
Mass burial graves?
Have they built a new temple
With the blood of their slaves?
Shhh!

Watch who you talk to you
Watch what you say
Or they’ll break down your door
And blow you away
Don’t put your hand out
Don’t take the chance
They’re ruling this country
With a truncheon and a lance
