City of Flesh

Early demo version

They’re drinking black blood out of raindrops,
Queen Mary wipes stains from her dress.
And Prince John’s having fun just pointing his gun
Here in the City of Flesh.

The poets have long been forgotten,
They died with their words on their breasts,
But the band leader plays for Queen Mary who pays
Here in the City of Flesh.

If I get to the sea, I just might be free
I might not have to swallow the sun,
The Queen was just here with the smile we all fear.
Followed by Prince John and his gun.

There’s a cold wind in the tops of the castle
Where the watchmen all look to the west
To the edge of the town, where the sun just went down
Here on the City of Flesh.

If I get to the sea, I just might be free
I might not have to swallow the sun,
The Queen was just here with the smile we all fear.
Followed by Prince John and his gun.

Here’s a prayer for the singers and dancers,
Who perform through the night for the guests
And hope they have dreams where reality seems
Far away from the City of Flesh.
