Not Good Enough

Demo 2012

We first made love in April as the earth began to spring
And I gladly gave up everything I owned.
My head was in the moonlight, and my heart was on the wing
And I realized my death had been postponed.
She was such a breath of heaven, so good and sweet and pure,
She made all the loves I’d known before seem rank and immature.
So I dedicated heart and soul to bring her happiness
But I just wasn’t good enough for her.

We sang together, laughed together, drank up all of life.
Nothing else could matter much to me.
And I began to think I’d never find a finer wife.
Oh how could anybody disagree?
She had the rarest beauty, so certain to endure.
It outshone all that kings and queens possess and that’s for sure.
She floated through my thoughts and dreams, which gave me happiness
But I just wasn’t good enough for her.

So now I live in darkness, in a wasteland all alone.
She told me that she loves another man.
And everything we ever shared has sadly turned to stone.
My heart is in the hole where it began.
How could I be so blinded to think I was secure?
Delusion is the path to hell and it’s too late for a cure.
She thanked me for the gifts and my attempts at happiness
But I just wasn’t good enough for her.
